The Fondant Bow

Fondant (US: /ˈfɑndənt/ or /ˈfɑndɑnt/, from the French) is one of several kinds of icing-like substances used to decorate or sculpt pastries.

Fondant is used to decorate high-end and advanced sculpted cakes.  It is also used to make flowers and decorations that are to adorn such cakes.  This is what Mom is ready to learn to do.  Anyone that knows her is aware of her ability to bake, ice and decorate beautiful and delicious cakes using buttercream and other traditional icings.  Adding fondant to her resume is a goal that brought her back to Texas and Hobby Lobby in Frisco to take classes with Ms. Joyce Wilson.

The first class assignment is to make a fondant bow.  The bow is white and can be used to  later decorate a cake.  Here’s some photos that I took in the class:

Ms. Joyce Wilson works with Mom in preparing to roll the fondant.

This process is much like preparing and rolling biscuit dough.  As a matter of fact, it is just like working with biscuit dough! Image

There are many small pieces that are left over from the cutting process.  These

are perfect for tasting.  Fondant actually tastes pretty good.  Good marshmallows

taste!!

Ok.  Here’s the final project.  It’s a little thick and heavy so it was best used for tasting.

Didn’t use this bow for decorating a cake but it was a good fondant exercise!!
